Jason' s Journey

Jason Mills

SCSHP President-Elect

I joined the Medical University of South Carolina in 2006 having graduated from the Ohio State University that same year.  Over the succeeding 4 years, I became the coordinator for the adult inpatient pharmacy, obtained my MBA from the Citadel Graduate College, and had two beautiful children (twins).  I still count many of the pharmacists and technicians that I worked with in those years as some of my closest friends.  In 2010, I ventured into the investigational drug services at MUSC as the IDS coordinator.  I spent the next four years heavily involved in clinical trials.  During my time in IDS and in the years following, I have always highly recommended investigational drug services experiences to our students.  It is a career pathway that is not routinely covered in traditional college of pharmacy curricula and the knowledge gained from participating in patient care with treatments not yet approved by the FDA cannot be captured in a classroom setting.  In 2014, I became the pharmacy supply chain manager for MUSC.  In this role, I feel I have found a calling.  In my time in IDS, I organically gravitated towards managing study budgets and negotiating with study sponsors.  These skills have served me well in my current role which is now focused on the financial performance of the pharmacy department at MUSC.  In addition, I also manage the 340B program, and supply chain management to a lesser extent, which has broadened my pharmacy knowledge as well as my professional network.  Of the duties I enjoy the most, I rank delving into the legislative components of the 340B program as my preferred.  By navigating the political components of the 340B program, I enjoy advocacy and service the most.  When the opportunity to become President of SCSHP arose, I happily submitted my name in the hopes that I could further grow as a pharmacist and advocate for my fellow pharmacists, technicians, as well as serve our hospitals and patients.
